Lisa: Crib Ceiling -- They Get It!
Hubby and I attended a college alumni event tonight with a discussion about "The Good Life". I expressed the whole surprise of not being prepped for the reality of giving up career for kids still wanting to pursue other passions while keeping them a priority, etc., challenges of balancing time, kids, husband, housework (ugh) etc. I mentioned my sister dealing with the same thing and that she started a Blogg site called Crib Ceiling to address just this issue. I want you all to know that the crowd of about 25 all ....
Laughed. They got the name of the Blogg and appreciated its sentiments. One guy paused longer and then laughed saying, "I get it....that's funny!"
Good job, sis!
The Good Life? The older alums said spirituality and meaning, giving back. The younger ones were more focused on achieving, not surprisingly. For me? Right now, staying up way too late again but having an outlet for creative expression AND knowing that I get to hang with the kids tomorrow -- we're going to an Aquarium. Looking forward to hugs and kisses from all three of them in the a.m even though it's past midnight and my toddler gets up around 5:30. -Lisa

Yea! They got it! I have to say I get a lot of calm stares when I say the name Crib Ceiling. Perhaps because I am mostly saying it to mothers, and they are just too sleep-deprived to get it. Or at least that's what I tell myself. :)
that is really funny. i was actually laying (or was i lying?) in bed last night wondering what crib ceiling means...i'm not a mom. is that why i don't get it? what DOES it mean?
Hi some girl (Some Important Girl),
Right, it is like a take-off on "the glass ceiling."
The glass ceiling is a phrase (you may know) used for women in the working world, that they only get so high, and then something that is there but that no one can see stops them from gettting any higher. (ie, as unlikely as it sounds, sexism)
For instance, women are half the workforce, but only 2 of the top 500 companies have women CEOs. Almost a fifth of them don't even have any women in their senior positions. Why is that? I don't think because only 2 women in the whole country are qualified.
So the joke here (really, not a joke), is that it's not really sexism after all. Its (also) the reality that women take care of their kids and family. And even if they don't "stay at home", having kids still really affects your career. So as we rise up the ranks, we don't hit a glass ceiling, we bump square into a crib with our little babies in it. And that affects everything.
And that's okay; we totally want that. It's just...I think a lot of us weren't expecting how hard it is. Also, how vital we are to our families; I don't think most women appreciate their own worth, it takes awhile to see it.
So this site is sort of set up to explore that conundrum. Also to laugh at it and explore ways to deal with whatever it is we are doing, better. Mostly to at least have a laugh at it.
(And maybe help women like you, coming along after us, to see more of their own worth and plan their own lives for what they want to do....I know that's pretty vain but I wish I had more perspective back then than I did...)
Thanks for asking and for checking back!
(And maybe I need to explain it better somewhere...:)
Kris
yeah! you should definitely copy and paste that somewhere. i totally get it now. i'd heard of the glass ceiling but never knew what that meant either!
